This summer was a busy one, with more young athletes coming to our sports camps in the UK than ever before. We’ve talked to everyone involved and selected our top 5 highlights from Nike Sports Camps Summer 2019…

1. Nike Lorenz coaches Hockey Camp

We had a special visit from German Olympic Field Hockey Player, Nike Lorenz (great name right?!), who came to our Nike Hockey Camp at Charterhouse School in July. She spent two days coaching our young players and teaching them all about life as an international player. It was great having her on camp!

Chelsea players launch Nike Football Camps with Chelsea FC Foundation

We’re excited to announce our new camps in association with Chelsea FC Foundation. To celebrate, last week we invited Fran Kirby and Ruben Loftus-Cheek to join us for an official launch of the new programme at Chelsea FC’s Training Centre in Cobham.

The new residential Nike Football Camps with Chelsea FC Foundation will start in summer 2019 and are available to 10-17 year olds. We have programmes for boys, girls and goalkeepers. As always, there are also optional English lessons for international players.

We were excited to be joined at the launch day by Chelsea players Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Fran Kirby, who took time out of their busy training schedules to train with some young players.

Exercise as protection against depression in children

Mental health is becoming an increasing priority for those working with children but we are still a long way behind in equipping young people with the best tools, resources and support to encourage good mental health and tackle mental health issues. Recent statistics show that depression is becoming a more prevalent condition in young people and it’s something that governments, the health industry and those who work with young people need to address and tackle with urgency.

It’s not clear what has caused this increase but assertions have been made about the increasing pressures on young people from social media and celebrity culture. An increase in the incidence of reporting as a result of increased awareness may also contribute to the statistics.

When it comes to goalkeeping training on football camps, there aren’t many people who do what we do. To us it’s obvious that if you come on a football camp there needs to be specific training for goalkeepers as the position requires a very specific set of skills compared to out-field positions. However, it doesn’t seem that young goalkeepers always get the tailored training they need on residential summer camps. Brighton FC reach the Premier League

We’re delighted with the news that our partners, Brighton Hove Albion FC have been promoted to the English Premier League. After three decades outside the top division, they have rightfully earned their place back in England’s top tier with an excellent season in the English Football League Championship finishing second with 93 points, just one point shy off league champions, Newcastle United.

Having undergone a turbulent period in the 1990’s and early noughties, from a period of homelessness and on the brink of oblivion; in less than a decade Brighton Hove Albion have progressed from a mid-table League One club playing at a 7,000 seater athletics stadium, to a Premier League club eagerly anticipating visits from England’s best teams to their state-of-the-art 30,000 seater stadium, The Amex.
